Why I'm Involved
I became involved in PicnicFest because building a Jewish community is very important to my family and I. We all have a purpose in building a greater Jewish community where everyone can find a meaningful place. I strongly believe the East Bay has tremendous potential and I look forward to being an integral part of its growth. My family's life is enriched by the traditions we keep as Jewish people. I want to work to provide future generations with a dynamic Jewish community where they can learn, grow and maintain Jewish continuity.

My involvement with YLD, teaching at Contra Costa Midrasha, and Congregation B'nai Shalom, comes down to a teaching from Rabbi Hillel that has always been a favorite of mine; If I am not for me, who will be? If I am for myself alone, what am I? And if not now when? It is important to me to make myself a part of the community and to help contribute to its growth in anyway I can. Tikkun Olam and Jewish continuity go hand in hand and for me and PicnicFest has been one opportunity for me in which to do this. I am happy to contribute to the East Bay Jewish community coming together to celebrate and support one another as we begin a new Jewish year, teaching, giving and living.

Why I’m Involved in YLD by Rebecca Trobe When I was asked to write a short piece on why I choose to be involved in the Young Leadership Division of Federation I was surprised at which stories leapt to mind to share. None of them were about my current or recent leadership experiences in my Jewish life but instead most of the stories that raced into my head were all about my experiences as a little girl and the fact that I stand proudly on the shoulders of my family legacy of Jewish leadership. read more... Lucky to be a Volunteer
Today I felt really lucky. I didn't win the lottery. I didn't get three strikes in bowling or a homerun in baseball. I didn't find my lost wallet or meet the man of my dreams of J-Date. But I did meet a group of amazing people who enthusiastically gave of their time and energy to totally renovate a local child care center. Over fifty volunteers dedicated their weekend... to participate in Rebuilding Together at the Child Education Center (CEC), located on Browning Street in Berkeley, California. It was truly an incredible experience. read more... Rachel Gucwa Leadership Initiative Participant 2007 |

The opportunity to meet new people, and be involved in social action and philanthropy are the reasons I have recently gotten involved in the Young Leadership Division of the Federation. I am a teacher at Oakland Hebrew Day School. I do have that connection to the Jewish community, but I was looking for more. I am relatively new to the East Bay (formerly lived in San Francisco), and I want to meet new people with similar interests as myself. Smooth Mondays and Shabbat dinners have made that possible. Working on social action and helping my community are very important to me.

I grew up in the Bay Area and attended the Hebrew/Judaic High School program known as Midrasha. After my Bat Mitzvah, my parents said that I only had to try it for one year, and if I didn’t like it I didn’t have to continue. That one year became five years because of a strong Jewish identity and sense of community that was created during my participation in classes, camping trips, leadership programs, and time spent with my Jewish friends outside of the programs.
